Haywards Heath Golf Club host charity day for Cancer Research UK

Haywards Heath Golf Club will be hosting a ‘funky trousers’ charity golf day on Friday 14th July to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

The event is being held in memory of Richard ‘Quin’ Hawtin, past club member and former secretary of the City Livery Club Golf Society, who died from oesophageal cancer in November 2022. Richard could often be spotted at Haywards Heath Golf Club sporting his favourite harlequin-patterned golf trousers, which earned him the nickname ‘Quin’.

Players at the charity event in July will be challenged to don their funkiest, most colourful golf gear in Quin’s honour. A prize will be awarded to the best dressed players – those daring to wear neutrals or monochrome may be fined! Players can enter as singles or a pair and will be grouped into a four-ball team.

Registration on the day opens at 8.30am with a coffee and bacon roll. A two-course meal will be provided once the rounds have finished. The cost is £95 per player. To enter, visit: https://forms.gle/Zrt8vfArca41yyig6 Or to donate, scan the QR code from your phone’s camera.

Local Lindfield family 'walk all over cancer' to raise money for Cancer Research

A brother and sister who tragically lost their dad to cancer, have been walking 10,000 steps a day in March to raise funds for Cancer Research. Freya and Charlie Burgess, accompanied by their mum Kelly, have been stepping out onto the streets around Lindfield to reach their target of £300.

Their devoted dad Kevin Burgess died on Christmas Day 2019 after a 10-year battle with cancer. “I’m incredibly proud of Charlie and Freya who are determined to walk 10,000 steps every day in March as part of the Cancer Research ‘Walk all over Cancer’ campaign,” said Kelly. “It’s a way to remember their dad and help ensure that other children don’t lose their parents. One in two of us will get cancer in our lifetime - we all know somebody who has got, beaten or sadly, not survived cancer,” Kelly added. “But we can all play our part to support the research that will beat it.”

The children have braved the recent wet weather to complete their daily steps, and Freya has also been helping to save the planet by picking up rubbish on her route around the village. Donations can still be made on the family’s Just Giving page: www.shorturl.at/mwHT4

Clean cars for Cancer Research

Staff at Scaynes Hill Service Station will once again open their car wash on 13th February to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

But this year’s event will be
particularly poignant as they
remember Jay Patel, who lost
his battle with cancer last year.
Jay owned the service station
with his brother Gunvant and
the pair started the annual
fundraiser in 2009. Since then
they have raised over £11,000 for the charity.

Last year saw the most successful event yet, with more than 250 washes sold and staff working extra-long shifts to cope with demand. Along with proceeds from a raffle, the event raised £3,150, smashing the target of £3,000.

This year the garage will be open for car washes between 6am and 11pm on Thursday 13th February.

Throughout the day customers are invited to ‘buy’ a car wash ticket by making a donation to charity. Tickets

are valid for 30 days, giving customers the option to return over the next few days. There is also the chance to buy raffle tickets in-store too. All the money raised goes directly to Cancer Research UK.

The team at Scaynes Hill service station are once again opening their car wash in order to raise money for a great cause.

Owner brothers Jay and Gunvant Patel have held the event since 2009 – which is always on 13th February. They will remove the price tag from the car wash and leave it open to donations for the day’s trade. All money raised will be going direct to Cancer Research UK. This year’s event is particularly poignant as Jay is currently undergoing treatment for cancer himself.

Since they started, customers have raised nearly £8,000 for the charity. This year the team are hoping to fundraise £3,000 on the day.

The garage is open between 6am and 11pm on Wednesday 13th February 2019.
